The Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow 2012

The Jewish Culture Festival is organized annually in the district of Kazimierz since 1988. The festival takes place in late June or early July. During nine days various events devoted to Jewish culture are held. The most attractive part of the festival is definitely music. However, that is not everything. Also different kinds of workshops, tours, lectures, exhibitions and plays are offered. They are organized in order to give the viewers an opportunity to get to know the Jewish culture better, learn about traditions and try the Jewish cuisine. To have better insight into this interesing culture and understand it deeper, numerous lectures on topics related to the Holocaust and to the culture in general are given. Generally, the aim of this festival is to show how rich and diverse the Jewish culture is. Every year a different face of Jewish music is presented. Jewish culture artists from all over the world meet in Krakow to give a great show. Solists, bands, jazz musicians and choirs – all they present different Jewish music styles starting with hasidic, synagogue song, folk, classical and ending with klezmer (very popular in Krakow) promoting this culture full of variety. This year’s Jewish Culture Festival  programme is very rich and includes the following main streams. Tradition –  here such artists as: David Krakauer, Bester Quartet & Tomasz Ziętek, The Maghreb Orchestra, Leopold Kozłowski will perform. Avant-garde – the new concert series: MuLaKuŻ (Polish abbreviation for Musical Laboratory of Jewish Culture) will be presented. Alchemia nights – fans of Jazz Klez Sessions are invited to Alchemia Club to see, among others: Dirty Honkers, Pitom Duo and Frank London. Last but not least, during the Shalom on Szeroka Street concert called the Jewish Woodstock, Jewish music in all its variety will be presented.  The venues of the festival are scattered around district of Kazimierz including synagogues as well as other parts of downtown Krakow.
